What changed in each build

WorkTool hasn’t had a public release yet. These are the internal alpha builds made for testing, newest first.

No public releases yet

The first public release will appear here with its version, date and download. Until then, entries are internal test builds.

  1. 0.2.0

    Internal alpha build

Apps close fully, Home in every pane, get new apps

Closing an app now really closes it, every pane starts with Home, and WorkTool can install apps through winget and Scoop.

    Added

    • Get new apps: popular apps and search across winget and Scoop, with install progress, cancel, Add to dock and uninstall. Installed apps go straight into the dock.
    • Automatic setup: WorkTool checks winget and sets up Scoop with its Main and Extras catalogs when it starts. Options > App installs shows the status and can turn it off.
    • Open browser as the first card on Home: a new browser tab with a search field and your websites.
    • Tab states for an app that hid its own window (Show or Close) and for an app that keeps running without a window (Close or Leave it running).

    Improved

    • Closing an app's tab ends the app. Apps that only hide in the tray, such as Discord, and their helper processes no longer stay in Task Manager.
    • Removing an open app from WorkTool closes its tab and the app.
    • Every pane starts with Home instead of an empty pane.

    Fixed

    • Add app showed apps in the WorkTool trash as already added; adding one again now restores it.
    • Apps with a classic menu bar were wrongly reported as refusing to move into WorkTool. They now embed.
    • A window handed back by WorkTool now gets its original parent back.

    Known limitations

    • Installers that need administrator rights show the Windows permission prompt.
    • Install progress shows stages, not an exact percentage.
  2. 0.1.0

    Internal alpha build

    First complete build

The first build with every part of WorkTool in place, tested on Windows 11.

    Added

    • Library and settings in local files with atomic saves and a backup.
    • Sidebar folder tree and File Explorer-style folder tabs: views, sorting, grouping, search, multi-select, Windows clipboard, Recycle Bin, Properties.
    • Website strip and built-in browser with a profile per site, sign-in popups, downloads and clear error states.
    • App dock with running indicators and groups; desktop apps embedded in tabs.
    • Tabs and multi-view layouts with draggable dividers, saved with the workspace.
    • Floating notes above everything, command palette (Ctrl+K) and quick search (Ctrl+P).
    • Windows 11 design: Mica, Fluent icons, dark and light themes, accent colors.

    Fixed

    • Classic apps were invisible inside the transparent window; app hosts are now layered.
    • Windows 11 Notepad crashed when embedded; Microsoft Store apps now run in their own window.
    • Notes drifted by one pixel at 125% scaling and didn't follow theme changes.

    Known limitations

    • No snap layouts menu on the maximize button.
    • Dragging files out to File Explorer isn't supported.
    • Windows 10 not tested.
